Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has asserted on the need for a coordinated effort with Meghalaya to address the severe flooding that impacted Guwahati on August 5.
Triggered by heavy rainfall in both Assam and neighbouring Meghalaya, the floods caused significant disruptions throughout Guwahati.
In a post, CM Himanta highlighted the situation, “Yesterday, Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya received record rainfall of nearly 100 mm. Combined with 60 mm of rain in Guwahati, this resulted in extraordinary flash floods in parts of the State Capital.”
Himanta Sarma convened a meeting with key stakeholders to formulate strategies for managing future flood events. Accentuating the importance of inter-State cooperation, he mentioned, “We will be in touch with the Meghalaya Government to implement a real-time coordination protocol.”
The flooding affected major areas of Guwahati, including Zoo Road, GS Road, Nabin Nagar, Ganeshguri, and Dispur. Residents faced significant challenges as roads became impassable, trapping commuters, schoolchildren, and ambulances for hours. Power outages were reported in several neighbourhoods.
CM Himanta praised the dedication of uniformed personnel who worked tirelessly to assist residents during the crisis. He added, “Today, I chaired a meeting with all stakeholders to work out a comprehensive solution incorporating early warning and quick response mechanisms.”
