Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has called on the State Government to be prepared to offer refuge to the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities staying in Bangladesh if circumstances necessitate. He asserted the response should be based on humanitarian needs rather than religious considerations.
Addressing reporters, Sangma shed light on the importance of humanitarian support for these indigenous groups. “The future remains uncertain, and if any distressing events occur, members of these communities might seek refuge in Bharat, particularly in neighbouring states,” he said.
Sangma further highlighted that the State should be proactive in exploring options for humanitarian assistance, although the ultimate decision on providing help will rest with the Central Government.
He stressed that assistance should not be influenced by religious affiliations. “Many Khasis and Jaintias are either Christians or non-Christians, and the Garos include both Hindus and Christians,” Sangma noted. He cautioned against making decisions based on religion, which could impact the effectiveness of aid provided.
Reassuring the public, Sangma stated that the Meghalaya Government is committed to finding ways to assist individuals from these communities, whether they are within Bangladesh or seeking refuge elsewhere.
