Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked National Handloom Day with a message celebrating the country’s rich handloom heritage.
Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “Warm greetings on National Handloom Day! We take great pride in the vibrant heritage and tradition of handlooms across our nation. We also honour the hard work of our artisans and reaffirm our commitment to being Vocal for Local.”
In parallel, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav extended his wishes, stating, “Best wishes on National Handloom Day to all weavers and industry members who uphold the spirit of self-respect through Swadeshi. Your craftsmanship preserves Indian culture and traditions. Let us all contribute to a self-reliant and prosperous India by embracing handloom and indigenous products.”
The 10th National Handloom Day is being celebrated today at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital, with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar serving as the chief guest. Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh and Minister of State for External Affairs & Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, will attend the event, along with MPs, notable personalities, designers, industry representatives, exporters, senior government officers, and over 1,000 weavers from across the country.
The ceremony will include the presentation of the Sant Kabir Awards and National Handloom Awards to outstanding handloom weavers. Additionally, the Vice President will release the Award Catalogue and Coffee Table Book titled “Parampara – Sustainability in Handloom Traditions of Bharat”.
Initiated under the guidance of the PM, National Handloom Day was first celebrated on August 7, 2015, to honour the Swadeshi Movement launched on August 7, 1905, which promoted indigenous industries, particularly handloom weaving.
National Handloom Day aims to honour handloom weavers, encouraging pride and motivation within the handloom industry by recognising their contributions to the nation’s cultural, traditional, and economic fabric. The celebrations seek to raise awareness about the handloom sector’s importance and its role in the socio-economic development of Bharat.
