In the wake of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics women’s 50 kg wrestling final, Indian Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra extended words of consolation. Bindra, expressing his deep sympathy, took to X to share, “Completely gutted. Sometimes you don’t need a gold medal to be a true champion to people…”
This gesture of support followed a heartfelt message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached out to Phogat after her disqualification for exceeding the 50 kg weight limit.
On X, PM Modi posted, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are Bharat’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head-on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.”
Sources indicate that the PM contacted Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha to obtain detailed information about the situation and explore possible options for Vinesh. PM Modi reportedly advised Usha to consider filing a formal protest regarding Phogat’s disqualification if it would benefit her case.
Phogat was set to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States in the Gold Medal match. However, an official statement from the Indian Olympic contingent revealed that Phogat was disqualified after weighing in slightly over the 50 kg limit.
Phogat had advanced to the Gold Medal bout after a decisive 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semi-finals.
