Following her release from prison, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has issued a heartfelt call to her compatriots to work towards establishing a democratic Bangladesh that respects all religions. In her initial video message after being freed, Zia expressed her gratitude and shared her vision for the country’s future.
In the video message delivered in Bangla, Khaleda Zia thanked those who had prayed for her well-being and attributed her ability to speak to the blessings of the Almighty. “Thanks to your prayers, I can address you today. We have successfully freed ourselves from this oppressive government. I honour the brave souls who sacrificed their lives for this cause,” she stated.
Zia asserted on the need to build a new Bangladesh on the foundation of this victory. “Our aim should be to create a new Bangladesh where youth and students will lead us with hope and vigour,” she declared.
She also cautioned against attacks on religious minorities and stressed the importance of inclusivity. “We must work towards a democratic Bangladesh that upholds respect for all religions. The youth and students are keys to achieving this vision of a progressive nation characterised by peace and prosperity, devoid of revenge and hatred,” Zia added.
Khaleda Zia, who is 79 years old, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for corruption in 2018 during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. Her release came via an executive order from President Mohammed Shahabuddin, following the recent collapse of the Hasina-led Awami League Government.
Currently, Zia is receiving treatment for various health issues.
