In an unusual show of unity, Kerala’s major political coalitions, the Left Democratic Front or LDF and the United Democratic Front or UDF, have set aside their differences to support relief efforts following the devastating landslides in Wayanad, which claimed over 220 lives. Both groups are now rallying their members to contribute to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund-CMDRF.
Following the tragedy, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office called for donations to the CMDRF to aid in relief and rehabilitation for the victims’ families and survivors. The fund has received over ₹53 crore in donations within a week.
Historically, the CMDRF has faced scrutiny and controversy, with allegations of misallocation of funds. However, these claims were dismissed by the Lokayukta, confirming that there was no basis to the accusations.
Senior Congress leader AK Antony, who has retired from active politics, urged a collective effort in a recent statement. “The Wayanad disaster is unprecedented in Kerala’s history. We must rise above political differences and contribute generously to the CMDRF for the survivors’ rehabilitation,” he said. Antony donated ₹50,000 to the fund, emphasising that even small contributions are valuable.
VD Satheesan, the Leader of Opposition and a frequent critic of the LDF Government, also demonstrated solidarity by donating ₹1 lakh to the CMDRF. He announced that all UDF MLAs would contribute one month of their salaries to the relief fund. Satheesan noted, “Although we often oppose the LDF, this is not the time for politics. We need to support the government’s efforts to address the disaster.”
The LDF has matched this commitment, instructing its MLAs and MPs to donate an equivalent amount from their salaries. Satheesan stressed the importance of transparency in the use of CMDRF funds and called for regular audits to ensure proper allocation.
In the wake of this disaster, both political factions have shown a rare moment of cooperation, focusing on aiding those affected by the calamity while setting aside their usual political rivalries.
