Amid ongoing turmoil in neighbouring nation Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) transferred a Bangladeshi national from Assam to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The handover took place at Sutarkandi port in Assam’s Karimganj district, with the BSF and Assam Border Branch police coordinating the transfer. The BGB received the individual at Sheola port in Bangladesh.
The detainee, Arbas Ali from Moulvibazar, Bangladesh, had entered Bharat illegally in July 2023. After being apprehended by the BSF and completing a year-long jail sentence, he was repatriated to his home country today.
Amid rising violence in Bangladesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously voiced concerns about border security and the safety of students. On July 21, Sarma reported on X that five Bangladeshi nationals were caught trying to enter Assam on July 18 at 3 am. The Assam police swiftly intervened and ensured the individuals were sent back without issue.
Additionally, Himanta Sarma had requested the Centre to aid in evacuating Assam students stranded in Bangladesh due to the escalating violence. In the past 48 hours, over 400 students and tourists from Bharat, Bhutan, and Nepal were successfully evacuated through Dawki, on the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border, according to Shillong officials.
