The Rajya Sabha witnessed a dramatic walkout by the Opposition INDIA bloc MPs following their exclusion from discussing the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics. The session was filled with heated exchanges, with Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar reprimanding Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien for his behaviour.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue, asserting on the need to uncover who was responsible for Phogat’s disqualification. The wrestler was found to be 100 grams overweight just hours before her 50 kg freestyle gold medal match.
Kharge asserted, “The issue of Vinesh Phogat is of great importance… We need to identify who was behind this decision.”
In response, Dhankhar urged that the issue should not be politicised, stating, “The entire nation is feeling the pain, including the President, the Prime Minister, and myself. To politicise this matter is a grave disrespect to Phogat. She has a bright future ahead.”
Dhankhar praised Haryana’s immediate response, which included offering financial relief and recognising Phogat as a medal winner. Despite this, the Opposition MPs remained unsatisfied and continued to demand a discussion.
Tensions escalated as Dhankhar scolded TMC MP Derek O’Brien for his outburst, asserting, “Your conduct is the most disgraceful in the House. I condemn your actions and will show you the door next time if you continue to shout at the desk.”
