US Vice President Kamala Harris, during a campaign speech in Michigan, faced a disruption from anti-Israel protesters who opposed support from Americans for Israel in its conflict with Hamas.
Midway through her address, Harris tried to address the protesters while maintaining her composure. “I am here because I believe in democracy and everybody’s voice matters, but I am speaking now,” she said, attempting to regain control of the event.
As the disruption continued, Harris took a more assertive approach. “You know what, if you want Donald Trump to win, then say that. Otherwise, I’m speaking,” she declared.
Her supporters responded with chants of “We’re not going back,” while the protesters were eventually escorted out. This led to a tense exchange between supporters of Harris and the demonstrators before the situation was controlled.
Harris’s visit to Michigan, alongside her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, aimed to galvanize support from younger, diverse, and labour-friendly voters in key battleground States like Michigan and Wisconsin. The Biden administration’s policy on Israel has been a controversial topic, especially among certain voter groups.
Earlier in the day, at a rally in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Harris remained upbeat despite the controversies. “As Tim Walz likes to point out, we are joyful warriors,” she said.
Contrasting her vision with that of former President Donald Trump, Harris criticised Trump’s divisive politics, stating, “Someone who suggests we should terminate the Constitution of the United States should never again have the chance to sit behind the seal of the United States.”
The Harris-Walz campaign has recently faced criticism from some netizens for allegedly imitating the style of MAGA caps to promote their Democratic campaign.
