After Vinesh Phogat’s unexpected retirement plan from wrestling following her disqualification at the Paris Olympics, her uncle and Indian wrestling icon Mahavir Phogat acknowledged the emotional toll this setback has taken on her. He expressed understanding of her decision to retire but mentioned that the family would try to persuade her to consider competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics once she returns home.
After being disqualified from the 50 kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh announced her retirement from the sport on Thursday.
Reflecting on the situation, Mahavir, who has been a guiding force in Vinesh’s wrestling journey said, “She was on track to win the Olympic gold, but the disqualification was a major blow. It’s only natural for her to feel devastated. However, once she’s back, we will talk to her and encourage her to aim for the 2028 Olympics.”
Mahavir praised Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s decision to honour Vinesh with the same respect, rewards, and facilities typically given to Olympic silver medalists. He believes that such recognition will inspire other female athletes in the State.
“The CM’s initiative is commendable. By acknowledging her efforts as deserving of a silver medal, it sends a strong message of support to all athletes. I appreciate the Haryana Government for this gesture; it will motivate others facing similar challenges,” said Mahavir.
CM Saini took to social media platform X to express his support, writing, “Our brave daughter of Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, performed brilliantly and reached the Olympic finals. Though she couldn’t compete in the final due to unforeseen circumstances, she remains a champion in our eyes.”
Mahavir Phogat further shared his commitment to continue coaching as long as he is able. He urged the families and supporters of other Tokyo 2024 qualified women wrestlers like Anshu, Antim Panghal, Reetika Hooda, and Nisha Dahiya to focus on preparing them for the next Olympics in 2028.
Vinesh had earned her place in the gold medal match after a dominant 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals. She was set to face the USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the top prize but was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit on Wednesday.
Throughout her career, Vinesh Phogat has earned numerous accolades, including two World Championships bronze medals (2019 and 2022), an Asian Games gold (2018) and bronze (2014), and three Commonwealth Games gold medals (2014, 2018, 2022). She also won gold at the 2021 Asian Championships and has secured multiple medals at the continental level.
