Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that the Central Government has directed the State to enhance security measures along the Bharat-Bangladesh border. He stated that rigorous surveillance is being maintained, ensuring that only individuals with valid passports, visas, and verified citizenship can cross the border.
“The recent changes in the regime across the border have not led to any unauthorised entries into our territory. Our commitment is to ensure the border remains secure and to prevent any illegal infiltration,” asserted the CM.
Besides, he expressed confidence in the Indian Government’s efforts, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to protect religious communities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Christians.
In Bangladesh, the political environment is rapidly evolving. The country is set to welcome an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The situation has intensified vigilance on the Indian side of the border. A Border Security Force (BSF) official reported that while a gathering of Bangladeshis was observed at the border, none managed to cross into India as the border was effectively sealed. They were subsequently sent back by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The crisis in Bangladesh has resulted in significant turmoil, with Sheikh Hasina resigning and fleeing amid escalating protests against her administration. Demonstrations against a job quota system have escalated into widespread unrest, leading to over 300 fatalities in recent weeks.
