Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has directed the immediate transfer of the NH10 stretch, from Rangpo to Sevoke, to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited or NHIDCL. This decision addresses a key request from Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay.
Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, On August 8, met Gadkari in New Delhi to present an agreement demanding the transfer of NH10’s maintenance from the West Bengal Public Works Department or PWD to NHIDCL, a central agency under the Road Transport & Highways Ministry. Gadkari has instructed ministry officials to fast-track the transfer due to ongoing issues with landslides and road subsidence affecting this critical route.
“The Union Minister has assured that the NH10 transfer to NHIDCL will be expedited,” Subba said, expressing gratitude for Gadkari’s prompt action. Subba asserted the necessity for new road alignments and tunnels on vulnerable sections of NH10 to enhance resilience against climate change and ensure uninterrupted operation, particularly in light of the 2023 flash floods.
NH10, vital for connecting Sikkim with Siliguri and the rest of Bharat, is currently managed by the West Bengal PWD between Rangpo and Sevoke. The section from Gangtok to Rangpo is already under NHIDCL’s oversight. The Rangpo to Sevoke stretch has faced significant challenges, including severe landslides since the monsoon began in June, which have disrupted Sikkim’s only highway connection for extended periods.
Subba highlighted the importance of NH10 for both the people of Sikkim and national security, stating, “Improving and maintaining this route will enhance the quality of life for Sikkim’s residents and ensure strategic readiness.”
He clarified that the demand for transferring NH10 should not be seen as a dispute between the Sikkim and West Bengal Governments. “This should not be framed as a conflict with the West Bengal Government. NH10 is an inter-State route that benefits both Sikkim and Bengal. It is a mutually beneficial situation for both governments,” Subba explained.
Gadkari confirmed that strengthening and re-alignment of NH10 will be carried out once the highway is fully transferred to NHIDCL.
