Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured the freedom fighters of the Quit India Movement, led by Mahatma Gandhi, marking its significant role in Bharat’s quest for independence.
In a post on X, PM Modi paid homage to those who participated in the movement, describing it as a pivotal moment in Bharat’s freedom struggle. “Homage to all those who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu’s leadership. It was truly a watershed moment in our freedom struggle,” he stated.
PM Modi further expressed his thoughts through a video message, where he highlighted contemporary issues by echoing the spirit of the movement, “Today, Bharat is saying in one voice: Corruption Quit India. Dynasty Quit India. Appeasement Quit India,” he remarked in the video posted on X.
The Quit India Movement, also known as the ‘Bharat Chodo Andolan’, was initiated by Mahatma Gandhi on August 9, 1942, during World War II, calling for an end to British rule in Bharat. According to the Culture Ministry, this movement highlighted the unfeasibility of British governance in Bharat and accelerated discussions on their exit strategy.
Gandhi’s call for “an orderly British withdrawal” and his “Do or Die” slogan galvanised the Indian populace, leading to widespread non-violent protests. The movement commenced from Gawalia Tank in Mumbai and is remembered annually as August Kranti Day.
