A Bangladeshi national was apprehended in Assam’s Nagaon district for unlawful entry into Bharat amidst the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh.
Following a tip-off, a team from Dhing police station detained four individuals, including the Bangladeshi national, at the Dhing cattle market on the evening of Wednesday. Authorities seized nine cattle heads from the group.
The arrested individual, identified as Humayun Kabir, 32, hailing from Lathi village in Gowainghat police station, Sylhet district, Bangladesh, reportedly entered Bharat illegally. Nagaon Superintendent of Police Swapnaneel Deka stated that Kabir confessed to bribing a Border Security Force official and crossing the border through Dawki without valid documents. Kabir entered Bharat on August 4 and arrived in Borghat, Nagaon district, on August 6.
Further investigation led to the recovery of a mobile phone with two Bangladeshi SIM cards from Kabir’s residence in Geruaati village, Samaguri. Kabir was residing at this village.
The arrest comes amid significant unrest in Bangladesh, which saw Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign on August 5 following massive protests over a contentious job quota system. The violence, part of the student movement, resulted in over 500 deaths, including police personnel.
