The Chemist and Druggist Association of Kangpokpi District took matters into their own hands today by seizing pharmaceutical supplies along National Highway 2, in a retaliatory move against an alleged ongoing blockade by valley-based organisations. This blockade, which has been in place since May 3, 2023, has disrupted the delivery of crucial medicines to Kangpokpi District.
The association had earlier warned of a counter-blockade on July 31, demanding the removal of obstacles hindering pharmaceutical transport. However, with no resolution in sight, the association executed their threat, intercepting two trucks at Bongmoul Village in the Champhai Sub-Division along NH-2. These trucks, en route to Imphal, were found carrying significant quantities of life-saving drugs, which were promptly seized by the association’s volunteers.
David, the General Secretary of the Chemist and Druggist Association, explained their drastic action, saying, “The continued blockade by certain valley-based organisations has created a critical shortage of essential medicines in Kangpokpi District, putting lives at risk. This counter-blockade is our response to ensure that these vital supplies reach our district.”
In response to the escalating situation, the Kangpokpi District Administration convened an emergency meeting with representatives from the Chemist and Druggist Association at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, included assurances from the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police that steps would be taken to guarantee the uninterrupted supply of pharmaceuticals to Kangpokpi. The officials also committed to assisting with the establishment of stockists in the district within the next week.
After receiving these assurances, the Chemist and Druggist Association agreed to release the seized medicines, which were originally bound for the valley, leading to a temporary easing of tensions.
