External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Male on Friday for a pivotal three-day visit aimed at revitalising the relationship between Bharat and the Maldives. This marks the first high-level engagement since President Mohamed Muizzu, who is known for his pro-China stance, took office last year.
Jaishankar’s visit highlights Bharat’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and its dedication to strengthening ties with Male. The trip follows a period of tension, marked by derogatory remarks from Maldivian officials about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Muizzu’s campaign pledge to remove Indian military personnel from the Maldives — a promise he has since fulfilled.
In a joint press conference with Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, Jaishankar asserted that Bharat’s partnership with the Maldives is foundational to regional stability and mutual welfare. He stated, “Bharat’s partnership with the Maldives is rooted in a shared desire for mutual progress and interests. It is a cornerstone of our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and our Vision SAGAR, reflecting our commitment to the Global South.”
Jaishankar’s visit also aims to review the accomplishments of both nations and to chart a collaborative path forward. During his stay, he will highlight the fruits of their partnership through several initiatives, including the launch of key projects in street lighting, mental health, children’s speech therapy, and special education.
Additionally, Jaishankar and Zameer inaugurated six impactful projects and witnessed the signing of an agreement between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Maldivian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. This pact aims to introduce a digital payment system in the Maldives.
The Indian minister also participated in the virtual inauguration of water and sewerage projects across 28 islands and toured the Addu reclamation project and Addu detour link bridge.
Jaishankar’s visit is a significant step in mending and enhancing bilateral relations between Bharat and the Maldives, reflecting both countries’ commitment to cooperation and shared goals.
