West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the public outrage following the death of a 28-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Banerjee assured that the accused would face the harshest punishment, including the death penalty if necessary. She stated that the case would be expedited through a fast-track court.
The trainee doctor was discovered dead inside the seminar hall of the State-run hospital on Friday, leading to protests from junior doctors demanding justice.
Banerjee condemned the incident as “unfortunate” and “despicable,” likening it to a personal loss. She confirmed that the accused, who has been arrested, worked at the hospital. After speaking with the victim’s family, she assured them of swift and appropriate action.
“Firstly, the incident is unfortunate and despicable. It feels like a personal loss to me. Their (doctors’) anger and demand is justified. I support it. Police have also accepted their demands,” Banerjee stated.
She asserted her commitment to justice, saying, “I have directed the case to be taken to a fast-track court. If needed, the accused will be hanged. But they should be given the strictest punishment.”
In her address, Banerjee urged the protesting doctors to continue their duties while they seek justice. She promised an investigation into any possible negligence by the hospital administration.
The CM confirmed her ongoing communication with the police regarding the investigation and indicated openness to involving a central agency if the victim’s family desired. “We don’t have any objections as there is nothing we have to hide. The Commissioner of Police was in the hospital and he was in contact with me. I am clearly saying that an exemplary punishment has to be made,” she asserted.
