The title of the much-anticipated third instalment in the Avatar franchise has been officially revealed as Avatar: Fire and Ash. The announcement was made at the D23 Expo, where director James Cameron, along with stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, unveiled the title and shared exciting details about the film, Variety reported.
While no footage was shown, Cameron presented some concept art, featuring Neytiri (Saldana) dancing over flames and riding banshees. “You’ll see a lot more of Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron stated.
“It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re entering really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
The film, Fire and Ash, was shot concurrently with 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The previous film depicted the ongoing conflict between humanity and the Na’vi following the return of the Resources Development Administration (RDA) to Pandora.
By the end of The Way of Water, Jake Sully (Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldana) had repelled an RDA attack on the Metkayina clan and the whale-like Tulkuns. However, their eldest son was killed in the skirmish, and the RDA’s presence on Pandora remains a threat.
Fire and Ash will continue the story shortly after these events, introducing the “Ash People,” a Na’vi clan that Cameron has suggested may have a more violent and power-driven nature compared to other clans.
The film is set to be released in theatres on December 19, 2025. The original Avatar (2009) remains the highest-grossing film of all time, and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in December 2022.
Cameron, who has produced all the Avatar films alongside his long-time creative partner Jon Landau, will continue to lead the franchise. Landau, unfortunately, passed away in July at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer.
