The Manipur Government led by CM N Biren Singh is intensifying its support for displaced individuals residing in refugee camps amid ongoing ethnic violence in the State. As of recent reports, 6,164 children aged six months to six years, 2,638 adolescent girls, 232 pregnant women, and 753 lactating mothers are living in these camps and are connected to nearby Anganwadi centres.
In a written reply to a Lok Sabha query, Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi updated on the measures taken to assist displaced individuals. According to Devi, these individuals are linked to 271 Anganwadi centres, which provide essential services and support.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, 103 women expecting their first child have been enrolled. Of these, 70 women have received the first instalment of Rs 3,000, while 33 have received the second installment of Rs 2,000. Additionally, 53 women expecting a second baby girl have been given Rs 6,000 each.
Moreover, 359 Anganwadi workers and 268 Anganwadi helpers are actively engaged at the relief camps, providing temporary services to meet the needs of the displaced population.
The Centre has also approved special assistance amounting to Rs 400.42 crore for those in the relief camps, following a request from the Manipur government.
The ethnic violence in Manipur, which erupted between the Imphal valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kukis in May of the previous year, has resulted in over 200 fatalities and left thousands homeless.
