The Tripura Police have enforced strict prohibitions on rallies and agitations in light of the recent turmoil in neighbouring Bangladesh, in West Tripura, including the capital Agartala. This decisive action is part of an effort to maintain public order and enhance security along the international border, a senior official revealed.
West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar disclosed that the Tripura State Rifles or TSR and Border Security Force or BSF have ramped up joint patrols along the border to avert any potential breaches. “Given the instability in Bangladesh, we are implementing all necessary measures to preserve peace in our area,” Kumar stated to the media.
The authorities are taking a tough stance against those spreading provocative content on social media, resulting in the arrest of two individuals for sharing inflammatory audio messages. The police are actively identifying others involved in similar activities. “We have already detained two youths for posting inflammatory content online. The police are fully committed to maintaining law and order,” Kumar stressed.
Warnings have also been issued to the public, especially WhatsApp group administrators, cautioning them against sharing or forwarding incendiary content. Non-compliance could lead to legal repercussions.
In a related development, the police recently denied permission to a Hindu organisation that intended to hold a rally protesting the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. This decision aligns with broader efforts to prevent any rise in tensions within the region.
Additionally, the Agartala Press Club has condemned the recent violence against journalists in Bangladesh following the regime change. The club’s president, Jayanta Bhattacharya, reported that since August 5, at least five journalists have been killed and approximately 100 others injured, calling for enhanced protection for media professionals.
