Doctors from numerous hospitals across Bharat have commenced an indefinite strike in response to the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. Medical professionals in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata have announced a suspension of all elective services until a thorough investigation into the case is concluded. The protesters are also calling for enhanced security measures to protect medical staff nationwide.
The strike was triggered by the recent tragic incident in which a 32-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The victim’s body was discovered in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital on the night of Thursday. The initial autopsy report revealed severe injuries, with bleeding from the eyes, mouth, and private parts, as well as injuries to her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.
In response to the incident, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the hospital on Sunday for the second time in three days. During his visit, he met with representatives of the protesting junior doctors and assured them that the investigation is being conducted transparently. Goyal urged the public to refrain from spreading rumours that could further escalate the situation.
The doctors’ strike underscores the urgent demand for justice and improved safety measures for medical professionals across the country.
Earlier, Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Principal Prof (Dr) Sandip Ghosh tendered his resignation amidst protests from doctors demanding his removal. “I am being defamed on social media… The deceased doctor was like a daughter to me. As a parent, I resign… I hope this does not happen to anyone else in the future,” Ghosh stated to reporters as he departed the hospital.
In the meantime, Kolkata Police has summoned three junior doctors and one house staff member for questioning. They were on duty the night of the incident, which occurred on August 9 and has sparked widespread outrage and protests, according to police sources.
