West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured of transferring the investigation related to the brutal rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI if the Kolkata Police does not resolve it by Sunday.
Banerjee made this commitment after visiting the bereaved family, expressing frustration with the current progress of the local investigation. She noted that while the CBI could take over, its success rate in solving such cases is often low.
The case has sparked ongoing protests, leading to the resignation of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s Principal, Sandip Ghosh. Ghosh, who stepped down amid the uproar, defended himself against allegations and claimed the accusations against him were false. He criticised the student protests as politically motivated and asserted that he had promptly informed the police and provided CCTV footage related to the incident.
Banerjee has expressed her intention to pursue the death penalty for the perpetrators and indicated that her government would support a CBI probe if demanded by the students. She asserted that the State Government has no objections to any external investigative agency stepping in if it is deemed necessary.
