Former President Donald Trump has taken credit for securing Los Angeles as the host city for the 2028 Olympic Games, while also casting blame on his predecessor, Barack Obama, for Chicago’s unsuccessful bid to host the 2016 Olympics.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump highlighted his involvement in the Olympic bid process, stating, “As President-Elect, I worked with the Olympic Organising Committee of Los Angeles in getting the 2028 Olympics to come to the United States. There was tremendous competition from other countries.”
Trump recalled the 2017 rivalry between Paris and Los Angeles for the 2024 Olympics, with Paris ultimately winning the bid for 2024, while Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Games. Trump, who had publicly supported LA’s bid, claimed that his efforts were pivotal in securing the event for the United States.
Reflecting on the 2016 bid, Trump accused Obama of undermining Chicago’s chances by not fully engaging with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He suggested that Obama’s lack of direct communication with the IOC led to the bid’s failure, stating, “The IOC needs the passionate backing and approval of the US President in order to secure the selection. I gave them what they wanted to hear, and got the job done!”
In a recent interview with Laura Ingraham on FOX News, Trump criticised the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, particularly the opening ceremony, which he described as a “disgrace.” He referenced a controversial scene from the ceremony that some compared to Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, asserting, “There won’t be any ‘Last Supper,’ the way they portrayed it the other night,” in response to questions about the LA 2028 Games.
Trump concluded his post by expressing his hopes for a successful 2028 Olympics under his leadership if he wins the upcoming presidential election, vowing to ensure the event reaches “new (and record!) levels of success.”
