The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has retained its position as the leading institution in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, marking six years at the top of the rankings.
The Education Ministry announced the NIRF 2024 rankings on Monday. IIT Madras has once again been recognised as the premier engineering college and has consistently held the top spot in the engineering category for the past nine years. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been ranked as the best university this year.
In the management category, Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta are among the top five.
The NIRF 2024 evaluates institutions based on five broad parameters: teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
This year’s rankings introduced three new categories, expanding the total to 16, which now include overall, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, innovation, State universities, open universities, and skill universities.
A total of 10,885 higher education institutions participated in this year’s NIRF evaluation. The NIRF methodology, adopted by the Ministry of Education in 2015, was developed by a Core Committee set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to establish parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.
