The Assam BJP is awaiting a decision from the Central Parliamentary committee after receiving 10 applications for nominations to fill two Rajya Sabha seats that have recently become vacant.
Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita announced that these applications, submitted by senior and respected party members, will be forwarded to the central committee for final consideration.
Kalita shared this update following a State election committee meeting, where the matter was discussed in detail. Among the prominent names seeking nominations are former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, former MPs Rajdeep Roy and Topon Gogoi, current MLA Manab Deka, and former MLA Mission Ranjan Das.
Key figures attending the meeting included Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the party’s State in-charge Harish Dwivedi. The two Rajya Sabha seats became vacant after Sonowal and Kamakhya Tassa were elected to the Lok Sabha.
Assam currently has seven seats in the Rajya Sabha, with six held by the BJP-led ruling alliance — four by the BJP and one each by its allies, AGP and UPPL. The remaining seat is held by an Independent MP. The Rajya Sabha elections for these seats, along with 10 others across nine States, are scheduled for September 2.
