In a significant cultural initiative, Prasar Bharati and the Assam Government have joined forces to produce a 52-episode television series on the legendary Ahom warrior Lachit Borphukan.
The partnership was formalised through an agreement signed today by Meenakshi Das Nath, Director of Cultural Affairs, Assam, and Amit Kumar, Deputy Director General (Content Sourcing), Prasar Bharati. The signing ceremony was graced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alongside Kanchan Prasad, Director General of Doordarshan, and other notable officials.
This television series, which will be broadcast across Prasar Bharati’s extensive network, including Akashwani, Doordarshan, and Prasar Bharati News Services (PBNS), is set to bring the life and heroic deeds of Lachit Borphukan to a wider audience. Lachit Borphukan, born on November 24, 1622, and passed away on April 25, 1672, is revered for his critical role in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where he led the Ahom forces to a historic victory against the Mughal Empire.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the agreement as a landmark moment, asserting its importance in bringing Assam’s rich historical legacy to the forefront. “This is a proud moment for Assam, as it represents our first significant effort to share Lachit Borphukan’s story with a national audience,” remarked the CM. He urged Prasar Bharati to ensure that the series remains true to Borphukan’s legacy and respects the cultural sentiments of the Assamese people.
The upcoming series will strive to both honour Lachit Borphukan’s remarkable contributions to Indian history and educate viewers with a narrative that balances historical accuracy and engaging storytelling. This collaboration between Prasar Bharati and the Assam Government is seen as a major step in celebrating and preserving the State’s rich cultural heritage.
