New and unsettling details have emerged in the tragic case involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The autopsy report reveals that the victim suffered severe trauma, including injuries caused by shattered glass, which led to bleeding from her eyes.
Key Findings from Autopsy Report
The trainee doctor, whose body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room, endured a brutal assault. The report confirms that her glasses were shattered by the force of the attack, causing glass shards to pierce her eyes.
Extensive injuries were documented, including bleeding from the eyes, mouth, and private parts. The victim sustained injuries to her belly, left leg, neck, right hand, and lips.
The report unequivocally ruled out suicide, affirming that the victim was murdered after being sexually assaulted.
Accused Arrested
Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, 33, has been arrested in connection with the crime. The investigation revealed that Roy had a history of violence and was addicted to disturbing and violent pornography.
The crime occurred between 3 am and 5 am on Friday. After committing the heinous act, Roy reportedly went to a police barrack and slept until morning.
Background of Accused
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer since 2019, had been married four times and was known for his abusive behaviour towards his wives. His neighbours confirmed his multiple marriages and troubled relationships.
Despite his mother’s claims of his innocence, evidence suggests that Roy had close ties to senior police officers, which may have influenced his posting to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and subsequently to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College.
Response & Protests
The gruesome nature of the crime has sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests and strikes by junior doctors across West Bengal and other parts of Bharat.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given a seven-day deadline for the case to be resolved, with a warning that the case will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police fail to solve it by next Sunday.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association or FORDA has called for an indefinite strike, with doctors demanding justice and the fulfilment of their demands before resuming normal duties.
This case has not only shaken the medical community but also highlighted the urgent need for improved security measures in healthcare facilities across the country. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are awaited as authorities work to bring the perpetrator to justice.
