In Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, resident doctors from numerous government hospitals have initiated an indefinite strike, demanding prompt justice for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
The protests have unfolded at major medical institutions, including King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI), and Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences. Outside these hospitals, poignant scenes emerged with patients desperately banging on doors, having travelled from various cities seeking medical care.
Despite assurances from the doctor’s union that essential services would continue, the long queues outside the Out-Patient Departments (OPDs) suggest a disruption.
Arun Kumar, a patient who journeyed over 300 kilometres to receive treatment at KGMU, expressed frustration, “Doctors have the right to protest, but what about us? We have come from so far.”
Protesters, adorned with black ribbons and holding placards, are calling for “swift justice” for the brutal crime and better security for medical personnel. Dr Ritika, President of the Resident Doctors’ Association at KSSSCI, stated, “We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough, time-bound probe into this incident.”
The demonstrations were triggered by the horrific murder of a 28-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Her semi-clothed body was found in a seminar hall on the night of Thursday, causing widespread shock within the medical community and leading to national protests and strikes.
In connection with the case, a civic volunteer, who was a regular at the hospital has been arrested. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has given the city police until Sunday to complete their investigation, with a recommendation for a CBI probe if necessary.
