In response to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, women across Bengal are planning a significant protest late tomorrow night. Scheduled to start at 11:55 pm, the demonstration is being promoted as “For women’s independence on the midnight of independence.”
Social media is abuzz with posters detailing various protest locations, which are continuously updated as more participants join from across the State’s suburbs. Men are also set to show their support in substantial numbers. Prominent figures like actors Swastika Mukherjee and Churni Ganguly, along with filmmaker Pratim D Gupta, have urged the public to join the midnight protest at a location convenient for them.
The city has been rocked by the tragic incident, where the doctor was discovered deceased in a seminar hall with severe injuries across her body on Friday. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal stated that investigations are ongoing, and the police are questioning all individuals who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident. He expressed confidence that any additional suspects will be apprehended within the next few days.
